Síle Ní Dhonnchadha

Senior Heritage Guide & Walking Trail Specialist

Insecteduquebec Ltd

"Heritage sites aren't museums behind glass — they're living landscapes with stories embedded in every stone, every path, every garden. My job is to help people read those stories, to understand why a place matters, and to walk through history with their eyes open."

Síle Ní Dhonnchadha

14 Years of Heritage Storytelling

From archaeological digs to comprehensive walking guides, Síle's journey has been about making heritage accessible to everyone.

Síle grew up in Galway and fell in love with heritage while volunteering at local archaeological digs as a teenager. That curiosity led to her degree in Archaeology from University College Galway in 2010. But the real learning came later — five years working with the Irish Heritage Council, where she learned how heritage sites should actually work for visitors.

In 2015, everything clicked. She was commissioned to develop walking guides for Kylemore Abbey's expanded garden trails. That wasn't a quick project — it took two years of historical research, conversations with archivists, and actual walking with different visitor groups to get it right. The result was comprehensive, accurate, and genuinely useful.

She's been with insecteduquebec Ltd since 2019, creating over 40 in-depth heritage guides across Connemara. What drives her work is simple: heritage shouldn't be for academics only. Every guide she writes assumes you're curious, but not an expert. Every trail description includes what you'll actually see, why it matters, and how to navigate it safely.

How Síle Works

Research First

Every guide starts in archives and libraries. She doesn't just look up facts — she reads original documents, studies maps from different eras, and talks to local historians. This is where the real understanding happens.

On-Site Testing

Before publishing, routes get walked with real people. Different ages, different fitness levels, different backgrounds. She watches where people struggle, what questions they ask, what they actually notice versus what the research says they should see.

Clear Communication

Guides assume curiosity but not expertise. She explains why things matter without being academic. Practical details (elevation, time, terrain) sit alongside historical context and ecological information — whatever helps you understand the place.

Accessibility Matters

Heritage shouldn't be locked away for the fit and wealthy. Every guide includes accessibility information — parking, rest points, terrain difficulty, facilities. Some trails are challenging; some are gentle. All are treated with equal respect.
